Two lessons of sixty minutes on the institution that decided, in most of Europe for most of seven hundred years, who was allowed to make things.

The pack teaches the disagreement rather than a verdict. Students meet the standard account — that guilds trained a workforce, enforced quality and moved skill between towns — and they meet the counter-case that guild activity, when it is counted rather than described, is overwhelmingly exclusion. They are told which historians hold which view, and why the same archive supports both. That is harder to teach than a conclusion, and it is why the extended questions carry more marks than the recall questions.

What you receive — five files

  • Teacher edition — learning objectives, a minute-by-minute plan for both lessons, a full answer key with a mark scheme, a note on where the class will get stuck, and four differentiation routes (support, core, stretch, EAL).
  • Student edition — the plate, four summarised provisions, four assignments, twelve multiple-choice questions and six extended questions. No answers.
  • Both editions in A4 and US Letter, laid out from one source, so the two versions cannot disagree with each other.
  • The map plate as a separate A4 landscape PDF, for printing or projecting.
  • An eighteen-term glossary, an eighteen-point chronology and a bibliography, identical across both editions.

A note on the sources

The source activity works with clearly labelled summaries of four documented provisions — Paris c. 1268, Venice 1271 and 1291, Cologne 1396, Nuremberg 1349 — each with the scholarly edition where the original can be read. Nothing is presented as a quotation. The originals are in medieval French, Italian and German, and inventing a translation to make a worksheet look authentic would be exactly the error this pack teaches students to detect.
