In the autumn of 865 a Viking fleet put in on the coast of East Anglia. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle called it the mycel hæþen here — the Great Heathen Army. Within five years it held York and had unmade three of the four English kingdoms; only Wessex was left, and it held at Edington in 878. The front of this shirt is that campaign: the fleet, the burning coastline, and the route drawn across the map of England. The back carries the Writesides of History mark and address, and nothing else.
